Common Questions on NRS e-Invoicing
What is the NRS e-Invoicing Mandate?
The NRS e-Invoicing Mandate is a tax regulatory framework established by the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS). It requires businesses in Nigeria to issue, transmit, and validate commercial invoices electronically in real-time through the official national platform, known as the Merchant Buyer Solution (MBS). The mandate replaces manual and unverified paper/PDF billing with standard digital invoices stamped with a unique Cryptographic Stamp Identifier (CSID) and QR code.
Does NRS e-Invoicing apply to my business?
The mandate applies to every business operating within Nigeria across business-to-business, business-to-consumer, and business-to-government sectors via a turnover-based phased implementation schedule. Large enterprises earning five billion Naira or more are required to maintain full compliance, medium-sized businesses with annual revenues between one billion and five billion Naira must comply starting July 2026, and smaller emerging businesses earning under one billion Naira must onboard by July 2027.
How does the e-Invoicing process work?
The electronic invoicing process operates through a continuous transaction control model that begins when you create a draft invoice inside your sales software or web app. Your platform formats the billing details into standardized structured data and transmits them to the national tax server, where the Nigeria Revenue Service validates the figures, applies an official digital signature with a cryptographic stamp and QR code, and returns the cleared document so you can legally issue it to your customer.
What are the penalties for not complying?
Invoices issued without official pre-validation are not recognized as legal tax documents in Nigeria, preventing your corporate clients from claiming input Value Added Tax or deducting legitimate business expenses against their corporate income tax. Non-compliant businesses face severe regulatory penalties, including immediate administrative fines starting at two hundred thousand Naira (₦200,000), accruing daily non-compliance fees, potential audit triggers, and tax surcharges up to one hundred percent (100%) on unverified commercial transactions.
